Seattle is famous for the headquarters of Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, Starbacks, Tully’s and so on. However, few people know that Washington State has many No.1 agricultural products such as red raspberries, beans, hops, spearmint oil, apples, cherries, European peer, and peppermint oil. Also, it produces large amount of grapes, onions, wheat, corn, potatoes, and carrots. Plus, 70% of hops are exported to Japan, so the majority of beer consumed in Japan may be made from the hops produced in this state. In the suburb, you can see the vast arable land whose area is the half of Japan.

If you go north for about 100km, you can go to Skagit Valley which boasts world’s No.2 production of Tulips. The east area is surrounded by the mountains and the west area is surrounded by the sea. And, the Skagit River meanders in the center. They say the frequent flood makes the productive soil, but I think it’s a very American rough, no, dynamic way of interpretation. In spring, this area is covered by colorful tulips, daffodils, tree peony, Chinese peony, irises, and lilies.

This weekend will be Halloween. After displaying pumpkin lanterns, kids disguise themselves with the costumes and go from house to house saying “trick or treat” and collecting sweets. They say the top collector gets one year’s worth of sweets just on this day. Now, get in a column and let’s get going to pumpkin hunting!

Now, we can see very beautiful fields that have ridges stretching to north and south here and there. I guess they finished harvesting and waiting for the next seeding and planting. The squared and rounded partitions are so geometrical, so I guess they will look like Nazca Lines from the air.

In the States, farming can be risky because of the wide size of the field. Some products are heavily influenced by climate, and the bad one can take some farmers’ living. Actually, many people have moved out leaving everything. These abandoned houses remind me of the haiku, “the place where noble soldiers one time dreamed a dream.”

Corn is also the main product of this state. Normally, it's harvested in summer, so they must raise two crops a year in this field. Corn husk is edible and its stems and leaves are used as food for cows because of its high nutrition. Farina is used as a material for industrial products. Also, extracted corn oil is used for salad oil and the pistils' style is used as medicine. And these days, bioethanol which is produced from corn draws strong attention because of their interests in environmental problem. So, all parts of corn is used for something and it's an essential natural source for human life.

I wonder what kind of family had lived here. It's a small one, so it could also be just a working shed. The one next to it must be a stable for domesticated farming animals. Were children playing here while parents were working in the farm? Did they relax listening to poplar's leavers being blown by the wind? Or, did they feel scared when they heard the dynamic sound of the branches being bent?

The state is dotted with prairies, so it's also used for stock-raising. In spring and summer, we can see cows eating grass idly here and there. this season, the rainy farms look moistened and emotional. The drizzling rain is coming from the haze ahead.

Together with my camera, my car is always with me no matter where I go. This is my indispensable feet to go to the mountains and the seas. Although I drive a little roughly, so the body has dents and scratches everywhere, the engine is in perfect working order. When I find attractive subjects, I make sudden stops, make wild U-turns, and go through narrow paths dragging the body along the branches. The mileage is more than 100,000 kilometers, but it still runs great. So, I said to him that I'll take a picture of him to thank him. Then, he posed with a swanky attitude and smiled. As expected, he's used to be photographed.
